Cassin's Auklet is a small, dark seabird of the North Pacific, known for its nocturnal habits at breeding colonies and its diet primarily of zooplankton.
Where to spot
Breeds on islands along the Pacific coast from Alaska to Baja California, and also in parts of the Russian Far East. Spends most of its life offshore in productive waters.
How to spot
Best seen at sea, flying low over the water with rapid wingbeats or resting on the surface. Can be hard to identify from other small, dark auks without close views. Look for its short, thick bill and white spot above the eye.
When to spot
Most easily observed at sea year-round. Visits breeding colonies nocturnally from spring to late summer.

These auklets forage by diving underwater and flying with their wings, often going to depths of up to 60 meters (200 feet) to catch their tiny prey.
