Spotted
Swinhoe's Pheasant is an endemic and endangered bird of the mountainous forests of Taiwan. Males are spectacularly colored with iridescent blue-black, white, and red plumage, while females are a more subdued brown.
Where to spot
Dense, broadleaf evergreen forests in the mountainous regions of Taiwan, from low to mid-elevations. They prefer areas with good cover and a rich forest floor for foraging.
How to spot
Remain quiet and still in forested areas, especially along trails or near water. Look for their distinctive male plumage moving through the undergrowth. Listen for their soft clucking calls or the rustle of leaves as they forage.
When to spot
Year-round, but generally more active and vocal during the breeding season (spring). Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times to spot them as they forage for food.
