Spotted
A small, elusive partridge found in the bamboo forests and dense undergrowth of Southeast Asia. It is known for its distinctive, loud, and often repeated calls that echo through its habitat.
Where to spot
Hill and montane forests, dense scrub, and bamboo thickets across parts of Southeast Asia, including Northeast India, Myanmar, China (Yunnan), Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam.
How to spot
These birds are highly cryptic and difficult to spot. Your best chance of locating them is by listening for their loud, distinctive calls. Once a call is heard, wait patiently and scan the dense vegetation from which the sound emanates.
When to spot
Most vocal at dawn and dusk, which are the best times to locate them; observed year-round.

The call of the Mountain Bamboo Partridge is sometimes described as sounding like 'ko-ko-ko-ko-ko-ko-kweeo' or similar repeated notes, often given in a duet by a pair, serving as a primary means of communication.
