Where to spot
Breeds across large parts of North America, from boreal forests in the north to western mountains. It winters in Central and South America, particularly in tropical montane forests.
How to spot
Search in dense undergrowth, woodland edges, and shady parts of parks. Listen for its iconic spiraling song, especially at dawn and dusk, which is often heard more easily than the bird is seen.
When to spot
Best observed during the spring (April-June) and autumn (August-October) migration periods, when they can be found in a variety of habitats en route to their breeding or wintering grounds.
