The Japanese Thrush (*Turdus cardis*) is a widespread East Asian thrush. Males are distinctively glossy black with a white belly and flanks, while females are browner. They possess a bright yellow bill.
Where to spot
Breeds in central and northern Japan, as well as parts of Korea and China. It winters in southern Japan, southern China, and parts of Southeast Asia, inhabiting forests, woodlands, parks, and gardens.
How to spot
Look for the male's striking black and white plumage and yellow bill. They forage both on the ground and in trees for invertebrates and fruit. Listen for their rich, musical song.

Best observed during the breeding season (spring to early summer) in its northern range, or during migration (spring/autumn) and winter in its southern range.
