Spotted
The Scaly Thrush is a striking medium-sized thrush renowned for its intricately scaled plumage, providing excellent camouflage against the dappled light of the forest floor. It has a distinctive 'booming' call.
Where to spot
Broadly distributed across Asia, from Siberia and Japan south to Southeast Asia and parts of Australia. It inhabits moist forests, woodlands, and bamboo thickets.
How to spot
Look on the forest floor, particularly near moist or mossy areas. Listen for its loud, deep, and often described as 'booming' or 'ventriloquial' call, which carries well through the forest.
When to spot
Year-round resident in many areas, but northern populations are migratory. Best observed during early mornings and late afternoons, or during migration periods.

Its highly camouflaged plumage allows it to blend almost perfectly with leaf litter, making it incredibly difficult to spot despite its relatively large size.
