Spotted
The Sado Thrush (*Turdus celaenops*), also known as the Izu Thrush, is a distinctive thrush species endemic to islands off Japan. It features a striking black head and breast contrasting with a bright orange belly and olive-brown back.
Where to spot
Endemic to small islands off central and southern Japan, including the Izu Islands, Sado, and others. It inhabits broadleaf evergreen forests and dense woodlands.
How to spot
Look for its black head and breast combined with the bright orange belly. It often forages on the ground among leaf litter but also feeds on berries in trees. Listening for its distinctive song is a good approach.
When to spot
Resident year-round on its island habitats. Most active and vocal during the breeding season (spring to early summer), when its song is more frequently heard.

Its common name refers to Sado Island, where a significant population of this endemic species resides, though it is also found on other Japanese islands.
