Everett's Flameback is a distinct species of woodpecker, characterized by its golden-yellow back and unique head markings, differing from its close relatives. It is endemic to the Philippines, favoring various forest types.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Philippines, found on various islands including Basilan, Samar, Leyte, Bohol, and Mindanao, inhabiting lowland forests and occasionally disturbed areas.
How to spot
Look for its golden-yellow back combined with its specific facial and head patterns. Listen for its characteristic loud, rapid drumming and sharp 'kek' calls as it climbs trees.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, observed year-round. Mornings are often the best time to locate them foraging and vocalizing.
Named after British colonial administrator and naturalist Alfred Hart Everett, who collected many bird specimens in Southeast Asia, including this distinctive flameback.
