Spotted
The Arizona Woodpecker is a medium-sized species found in the Sky Islands region of the southwestern United States and Mexico, characterized by its plain brown back, heavily spotted breast, and a red hindcrown in males.
Where to spot
Inhabits pine-oak forests, sycamore-lined canyons, and riparian woodlands in the 'Sky Islands' of southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico (USA), and northern Mexico.
How to spot
Look for its uniform brown back, distinguishing it from other woodpeckers. Scan tree trunks and larger branches in pine-oak forests. Listen for its high-pitched calls and light, rapid drumming.
When to spot
Resident year-round in its specific highland habitat. Active during daylight hours, often more visible in the mornings.
This woodpecker is unique among North American woodpeckers for its plain brown back, which provides excellent camouflage against the bark of the pine and oak trees it inhabits.
