Spotted
The Olive-backed Woodpecker is a medium-sized woodpecker with olive-green upperparts and a distinctive pale head pattern. It is a resident of tropical and subtropical forests.
Where to spot
Found in Southeast Asia, including the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo, inhabiting primary and secondary lowland rainforests, swamp forests, and occasionally plantations.
How to spot
Look for its olive-green back and pale, often streaked, head. Listen for its soft, often rapid drumming and a series of sharp 'chip' or 'chup' calls. Pay attention to movement within dense vegetation.
When to spot
Active throughout daylight hours, observable year-round. It can be elusive in dense forest, but mornings are generally best for observation.
This species has a unique foraging style, often moving slowly and meticulously through tangled vines and dense undergrowth in addition to tree trunks, searching for insects.
