Spotted
The Malabar Flameback is a striking woodpecker species characterized by its vibrant golden-yellow back and a prominent red crest in males. This medium-sized bird is a resident breeder in its native range, often seen diligently foraging on tree trunks.
Where to spot
Primarily found in the tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests and mangroves of the Western Ghats region of India.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive golden-yellow back and red crest (males) against tree bark. Listen for its loud, rattling calls and characteristic drumming sounds as it excavates for insects.
When to spot
Best observed during daylight hours, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon when foraging activity is highest. It is a resident species, observable year-round.
Unlike many woodpeckers that only climb upwards, the Malabar Flameback is known for its agility, often descending trees head-first while searching for insects.
