The Cream-backed Woodpecker is a magnificent species, notable for its contrasting cream-colored back and dark, glossy plumage. It is a large woodpecker, typically found in open woodlands and savannas.
Where to spot
Found in South America, primarily in central and northeastern Argentina, southeastern Bolivia, western Paraguay, and parts of Uruguay and Brazil, favoring dry Chaco forests and woodlands.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive cream or whitish back which stands out against its otherwise dark body. Males have a red crest. Listen for its loud calls and powerful drumming.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, can be observed year-round in its resident range. Mornings are often the best time to locate them.
