The Spot-breasted Parrotbill is a large and striking parrotbill species distributed across Southeast Asia and parts of China. It is easily recognized by its heavily spotted breast.
Where to spot
Found from the Himalayas (northeast India, Bhutan) east through Myanmar, northern Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and southern China. Inhabits dense broadleaf evergreen forests and bamboo at mid-elevations.
How to spot
Look for its relatively large size, heavy pale bill, and, most importantly, the prominent dark spots on its pale breast. Often found in small, noisy flocks, moving through the undergrowth or mid-canopy. Listen for its distinctive loud calls.
When to spot
Resident species, active throughout the day. Often more vocal and visible during the breeding season from spring to early summer.
