Spotted
The Brown Parrotbill is a relatively large and rather plain-looking parrotbill found in the montane forests of the eastern Himalayas and parts of Southeast Asia.
Where to spot
Ranges from the eastern Himalayas (Nepal, Bhutan, northeast India) through northern Myanmar, Laos, northern Thailand, and southern China. Inhabits dense broadleaf forests, bamboo, and thickets at mid-elevations.
How to spot
Its plain brown plumage and relatively large size for a parrotbill are key. Often found in small, noisy flocks, moving through dense undergrowth. Listen for its distinctive, often deep and rather nasal calls.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active during the day. More easily located by its calls during the breeding season (spring-summer).

Despite its subdued plumage, this parrotbill is a surprisingly powerful bird, using its stout bill to tear apart bamboo stalks to access insects and shoots.
