A large, robust pigeon found in the Himalayas and surrounding mountainous regions of Asia. Its plumage features distinctive speckling, giving it its common name.
Where to spot
Found in the Himalayas and mountains of Southeast Asia, from Afghanistan eastward through Nepal, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, and into parts of China and Thailand.
How to spot
Look in temperate broadleaf forests and mixed woodlands, often at higher elevations. Listen for their deep calls and observe their powerful, direct flight. Note the speckled head and breast for identification.
When to spot
Resident year-round in much of its range, but can undertake altitudinal migrations. Best observed during winter when they descend to lower altitudes or during spring when they are more vocal.
