Spotted
Wallace's Fruit Dove is a relatively large and strikingly marked fruit dove, named after the famous naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace. It is known for its grey head, vibrant red breast, and green back.
Where to spot
Found on various islands in eastern Indonesia and New Guinea, including the Moluccas, Kai Islands, and Aru Islands. It typically inhabits tropical lowland forests and forest edges.
How to spot
Look for its distinct grey head and red breast contrasting with its green plumage. Scan the middle and upper canopy of fruiting trees. They can be shy, so quiet observation from a distance is often best.
When to spot
Can be observed throughout the year within its range. Most active when feeding on fruits, typically during the morning and late afternoon hours.
