Spotted
The White-tipped Dove is a widespread and highly adaptable dove species found throughout the Neotropics. It is easily recognized by the prominent white tips on its outer tail feathers, especially noticeable in flight.
Where to spot
Highly adaptable, found in a wide variety of habitats from semi-arid scrub to humid forest edges, gardens, and even urban areas across the southwestern USA, Mexico, Central, and South America.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on the ground or perching in trees and on wires. Its plain greyish-brown plumage and, crucially, the prominent white tips on the outer tail feathers (best seen in flight) are key identification features. Listen for its characteristic deep, mournful 'who-oo-oo-oo' or 'coo-cooo-ooh' call.
When to spot
Year-round. Active throughout the day, often seen foraging on the ground or perched conspicuously.
