The Eared Dove is one of the most widespread and abundant dove species in South America, known for its adaptability to a wide range of habitats, from dense forests to urban parks. It is often seen in large flocks.
Where to spot
Widely distributed across most of South America, as well as parts of Central America and the Caribbean (Trinidad and Tobago).
How to spot
Look for it in open woodlands, agricultural areas, urban parks, and gardens. Identify by its grey-brown body, a distinctive black stripe behind the eye (resembling an "ear"), and black spots on the wings. Listen for its soft, mournful cooing.
When to spot
Active throughout the day. Flocks are often seen feeding in fields during the morning and late afternoon, and large roosts gather at dusk.
