Where to spot
Humid lowland and foothill forests from southeastern Mexico south to northwestern Ecuador.
How to spot
Often heard before seen. Listen for its distinctive, mournful, whistled calls. Look for a relatively dull, shaggy-plumaged bird perched quietly in the mid-story or subcanopy. The rufous color is key.

The Rufous Mourner is a vocal mimic, known to imitate the alarm calls of other bird species to distract them from its nest.
