A small and distinctive bird found in the canopy of the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil. Males have a dull brownish body with a contrasting buff throat and hidden purple flank tufts.
Where to spot
Canopy and subcanopy of humid lowland and montane forests in southeastern Brazil, primarily in the Atlantic Forest biome.
How to spot
Scan the upper canopy of tall trees, especially near mistletoe clumps. It is often quiet and inconspicuous. Look for its buff throat and listen for its high-pitched, thin calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during early mornings when foraging for mistletoe berries.
This species is considered vulnerable due to the extensive destruction and fragmentation of its Atlantic Forest habitat.
