Spotted
A widespread and common becard species found in the humid lowland forests of South America. Males have an entirely black cap contrasting with a grey body and white underparts.
Where to spot
Humid lowland and foothill forests, forest edges, and second-growth areas throughout much of Amazonian and Atlantic Forest regions of South America.
How to spot
Look for it in the mid-story and canopy, often joining mixed-species flocks. The male's distinct black cap is an excellent field mark. Listen for its clear, whistled calls, which are often heard from quiet perches.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Active throughout the day, foraging in the mid-story and canopy.
The Black-capped Becard often sits quietly, making it challenging to spot, but its unique nest—a large, pendulous ball of plant material—is often quite visible.
