Spotted
A small, somewhat inconspicuous bird found in the canopy of humid rainforests in the Amazon basin. Males have a subtle white eyebrow and a small patch of hidden purplish feathers on the flanks, characteristic of purpletufts.
Where to spot
Canopy and subcanopy of humid lowland rainforests in the Amazon basin, including parts of Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia.
How to spot
Scan the upper canopy of tall trees, especially those with mistletoe. It's often quiet and can be difficult to locate. Look for its dusky plumage and listen for high-pitched, thin calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during early mornings when foraging, though often difficult to spot high in the canopy.

Like other purpletufts, this species feeds primarily on mistletoe berries and small insects gleaned from foliage, often found high in the canopy.
