Spotted
The Southern Cassowary is a magnificent, large flightless bird native to tropical rainforests, celebrated for its glossy black plumage, vibrant blue and red neck, and a striking bony casque on its head. It stands as one of the largest and most powerful birds globally.
Where to spot
Found in the dense tropical rainforests of northeastern Australia, New Guinea, and several surrounding islands. They prefer areas with dense undergrowth and can be exceptionally challenging to spot due to their elusive nature.
How to spot
Observing a Southern Cassowary demands significant patience and quiet movement within their dense rainforest habitat. Look for their distinctive three-toed tracks on the forest floor and listen for their characteristic low booming calls. If encountered, maintain a respectful distance as they can be defensive.
When to spot
Most active during daylight hours, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon, when they forage for fallen fruit. Observing them requires patience and is often most successful when specific fruit species they favor are in season.

Often referred to as the 'rainforest gardener,' the Southern Cassowary plays a critical ecological role in dispersing seeds of numerous rainforest plants across large areas, which is vital for maintaining forest health and regeneration.
