Spotted
The Willie Wagtail is a highly recognizable and beloved bird, known for its bold personality and constant tail-wagging motion. Its plumage is entirely black and white, making it visually striking. It is an active and fearless insectivore, often seen in open areas.
Where to spot
Widespread across Australia, New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and parts of Indonesia. It thrives in a variety of open or semi-open habitats, including grasslands, woodlands, farmlands, urban parks, and gardens. It often occurs near water.
How to spot
Easily identified by its entirely black upperparts, head, and chest, contrasting with white underparts, and its constantly wagging tail. Its loud, chattering calls, often described as 'sweet pretty creature', are also very distinctive.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, year-round. It is a resident species across most of its range, often seen foraging at any time.

The Willie Wagtail's constant side-to-side tail-wagging is a signature behavior, believed to flush out insects from the ground or vegetation. It can be quite bold, often approaching humans closely.
