Spotted
The Dwarf Cassowary is the smallest of the cassowary species, yet still a robust and formidable flightless bird of the rainforest. It features a comparatively shorter casque and less vibrant blue and red coloration on its neck compared to its larger relatives.
Where to spot
Primarily found in the montane rainforests of New Guinea and New Britain, typically inhabiting higher elevations than other cassowary species. Its specialized habitat contributes to its elusive nature.
How to spot
Similar to other cassowaries, direct observation is challenging due to their dense habitat and retiring nature. Look for signs of their presence, such as disturbed leaf litter or tracks. Their smaller stature and less prominent casque help distinguish them from other cassowary species where their ranges might overlap.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, foraging for fruit, fungi, and small invertebrates on the forest floor. Like other cassowaries, they are generally shy and difficult to observe.

Despite its 'dwarf' appellation, the Dwarf Cassowary is still a substantial bird, standing over 1 meter (3.3 feet) tall. It uniquely prefers mountainous, high-altitude rainforests, making it one of the most challenging cassowaries to study in the wild.
