Spotted
The South Polar Skua is a large, robust seabird of the polar regions, known for its distinctive pale primary patches and highly migratory nature. It is a formidable predator and scavenger.
Where to spot
Breeds exclusively in Antarctica and sub-Antarctic islands. Undertakes vast migrations, reaching the North Pacific and North Atlantic oceans during the austral winter.
How to spot
Look for its large size, powerful flight, and particularly the pale patches at the base of the primary feathers, which are often visible in flight. It can be difficult to distinguish from other large skuas without experience.
When to spot
Best observed during the austral summer (November-March) near its Antarctic breeding colonies. Migratory birds can be seen offshore in temperate and tropical waters during other seasons.
