The Chilean Skua is a large, predatory seabird found along the Pacific coast of South America, known for its robust build and dark plumage. It is an opportunistic hunter and kleptoparasite.
Where to spot
Primarily found along the Pacific coast of Chile and Peru, breeding on coastal islands and southern Patagonia, and dispersing north along the coast in winter.
How to spot
Look for its large, powerful flight and dark coloration. Often seen harassing other seabirds for food or foraging along shorelines. Identify by its size and dark plumage.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round within its coastal range. Breeding activity is most prominent in the austral summer (November-February).
Skuas, including the Chilean Skua, are notorious for their kleptoparasitism, aggressively chasing other seabirds to steal their freshly caught food.
