Spotted
The smallest and most graceful of the skuas, the Long-tailed Skua is recognized by its exceptionally long, thin central tail feathers that extend well beyond the rest of its tail. It primarily feeds on insects and lemmings in the Arctic.
Where to spot
Breeds on the Arctic tundra. Migrates extensively over open oceans globally, but typically stays further offshore than other skua species.
How to spot
Look for its relatively small size, very long and thin central tail streamers (in adults), and pale underparts contrasting with a distinct dark cap. Its flight is buoyant and agile. It is generally less aggressive in chasing other birds for food compared to other skuas.
When to spot
Best observed during its breeding season in the Arctic summer. During spring and autumn migration, it is often observed from research vessels or on pelagic birding trips far from land.
