Spotted
A medium-sized, agile skua known for its piratical habits and pointed central tail feathers. It is frequently observed harassing gulls and terns to steal their catches, a behavior known as kleptoparasitism.
Where to spot
Breeds in Arctic and sub-Arctic regions. Migrates through temperate and tropical oceans worldwide, often closer to shore than other skua species.
How to spot
Look for its pointed central tail feathers (shorter than Arctic Skua's, longer than Pomarine's), slender build, and agile flight. Plumage occurs in light and dark morphs. Watch for its aggressive pursuit of other birds to force them to drop food.
When to spot
Best observed during its breeding season in the summer in northern latitudes. Also commonly seen during spring and autumn migration, often from coastal headlands or offshore.

The 'parasitic' in its name directly refers to its primary feeding strategy: kleptoparasitism, where it steals food from other birds rather than hunting for itself.
