The Sora is a small, secretive rail found in freshwater marshes across North and Central America. It is characterized by its short, yellow bill, black face and throat, grey breast, and brown-streaked back. It is often heard before it is seen, and is a hallmark sound of North American wetlands.
Where to spot
Breeds across temperate North America (Canada and northern US). Migrates south to winter in the southern US, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. Inhabits dense freshwater marshes, rice paddies, and bogs.
How to spot
Extremely shy and difficult to see. Best identified by its distinctive calls: a whistled 'sora' or a descending whinny. Stake out a marsh at dawn or dusk, remain still, and listen. Occasionally, it may walk briefly into view at the edge of vegetation.
When to spot
Breeding season (spring-summer) is best for hearing calls in northern areas. During migration (spring and fall), it can be found in a wider variety of wetlands. Present on wintering grounds from late fall through early spring.
