The Horned Coot is a large and distinctive coot found in high-altitude Andean lakes of South America. It is characterized by its entirely black plumage and three prominent, fleshy 'horns' or caruncles on its forehead, unique among all coot species. It is a remarkable specialist of extreme environments.
Where to spot
Endemic to the high Andes of South America, found in extreme altitudes (3,500-5,000 m / 11,500-16,400 ft) in southwestern Bolivia, northeastern Chile, and northwestern Argentina. Inhabits large, saline or brackish lakes.
How to spot
Look for its entirely black plumage and the unique three fleshy 'horns' on its forehead. Its preference for open, high-altitude lakes makes it relatively visible. Observe its massive nests constructed from stones.
When to spot
Year-round resident in its high-altitude habitat. Primarily active during the day.
