The Tasmanian Nativehen is a large, flightless rail endemic to Tasmania, Australia. It is a robust, terrestrial bird with olive-brown upperparts, blue-grey underparts, a prominent red eye, and a stout yellow bill. It is often seen in open grasslands near water, sometimes in small groups.

Endemic to Tasmania, Australia. Found in open grasslands, pastures, and woodlands, particularly near permanent water sources.
How to spot
Look for its large size, flightless nature, blue-grey underparts, and bright red eye. It is often quite tame and easily observed, especially in protected areas. Listen for its wide range of calls, including harsh, rasping sounds and high-pitched chirps.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Primarily active during the day, often foraging in the open.
This species is the only rail in the world that is considered truly flightless yet not critically endangered, thriving in its Tasmanian habitat.
