Spotted
The Uniform Swiftlet is a widespread swiftlet species found across parts of South and Southeast Asia, named for its consistently dark plumage. It is a highly agile aerial insectivore, spending much of its life on the wing.
Where to spot
Found in South and Southeast Asia, including parts of India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Inhabits a variety of environments from lowland forests to urban areas, often found near caves or cliffs.
How to spot
Look for its uniformly dark, sooty-brown plumage, lacking any distinct pale patches. Observe its swift, direct flight, often in large flocks, as it forages for insects high in the sky or over open areas.
When to spot
Year-round resident, active throughout the day, particularly in the morning and late afternoon when foraging is most intense.
This species is known to construct its cup-shaped nests using mainly solidified saliva mixed with some plant material or feathers, often attached to vertical surfaces inside caves, buildings, or under bridges.
