Spotted
The Sooty Grouse is a large, dark grouse species inhabiting coniferous forests along the Pacific Coast of North America. It is distinguished by its male's deep, resonant, booming hooting call.
Where to spot
Found in coniferous forests, particularly coastal and montane regions, along the Pacific Coast of North America.
How to spot
Listen for the male's distinctive booming hoots echoing through the forest. Look for them foraging on the ground or perched in trees, relying on their excellent camouflage to remain hidden. Being still and observant increases your chances.
When to spot
Observable year-round. Males are most vocal during the breeding season (April-June), especially at dawn and dusk, when their booming calls are a key part of their display.
