Spotted
The Black Chat is an entirely glossy black chat, known for its sleek appearance and association with rocky, open habitats. Its uniform dark plumage makes it distinctive.
Where to spot
Found across parts of central and western Africa, inhabiting rocky hills, outcrops, and inselbergs in savannas and open woodlands.
How to spot
Search in rocky terrain. Look for it perching conspicuously on boulders or low branches. Its uniform glossy black plumage is a key identifier. Listen for its loud, melodious song.

Despite its dark coloration, it can be remarkably hard to spot against shadowed rocks or in dim light, but it becomes strikingly visible when it moves into sunlight.
