A distinctive forktail with a prominent chestnut nape, contrasted by its black-and-white plumage. It is a denizen of clear mountain streams.
Where to spot
Rocky streams and rivers in lowland and montane evergreen forests of Southeast Asia, including the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo.
How to spot
Look along pristine, rocky forest streams. Its constant tail-wagging and unique nape color are excellent field marks.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon.
