The Bonthain Flycatcher is a small, striking passerine bird, endemic to the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Males are particularly vibrant with orange-red underparts, contrasting with darker upperparts.
Where to spot
Endemic to the montane forests of southern Sulawesi, Indonesia, primarily found at high elevations on Mount Lompobattang.
How to spot
Look for it in the understory and mid-canopy of dense montane forests. Listen for its high-pitched calls and observe its active foraging style, darting out to catch insects.
When to spot
Year-round, as it is a resident species within its limited range. Activity tends to be higher during the cooler parts of the day.
This species is named after Mount Bonthain (now Mount Lompobattang), one of the key areas where it can be found in Sulawesi's montane forests.
