Where to spot
Endemic to the dry scrublands and semi-deserts of the Karoo region in South Africa and adjacent parts of Namibia. It prefers areas with low, thorny bushes.
How to spot
Look for its plain brown plumage and long, often flicked tail. It frequently perches on top of bushes. Listen for its rich, varied song, which often includes mimicry.
When to spot
Resident year-round. It is often active throughout the day, foraging for insects among the low vegetation.
Its melodious and varied song, often delivered from an exposed perch, is a characteristic sound of the arid Karoo landscape.
