Spotted
The Socorro Dove is a poignant example of a species that is extinct in the wild, having previously inhabited Socorro Island off the coast of Mexico. Conservation efforts are underway to breed this beautiful dove in captivity with hopes of reintroduction.
Where to spot
**Extinct in the wild.** Formerly endemic to Socorro Island, part of the Revillagigedo Islands, off the Pacific coast of Mexico. Currently only found in captive breeding facilities worldwide.
How to spot
**Not applicable for wild observation.** To see this species, one must visit zoos or conservation centers participating in its captive breeding program. Look for its distinctive reddish-brown plumage and lack of a visible white wing patch like its close relative, the White-winged Dove.
When to spot
**Not observable in the wild.** Historically, it would have been active during daylight hours, foraging on the island's unique flora.

The Socorro Dove's wild population disappeared largely due to habitat destruction by introduced sheep and predation by feral cats, highlighting the devastating impact of invasive species on isolated island ecosystems.
