Widely distributed across sub-Saharan Africa, Madagascar, and the Arabian Peninsula. Prefers open dry country, semi-deserts, savannas, and scrubland, often near water.
How to spot
Look for its very small size and long, pointed tail. Males are unmistakable with their black facial mask. Often seen walking quickly on the ground or in small flocks. Listen for its quiet, low cooing calls.
