Spotted
The Barred Cuckoo-Dove is a striking pigeon characterized by its very long tail and finely barred plumage, especially on the neck and breast. It is typically found in humid montane forests, where its subtle coloration helps it blend into the dappled light.
Where to spot
Inhabits montane forests and dense woodlands across parts of South Asia and Southeast Asia, including the Himalayas, Indochina, and parts of the Malay Peninsula. Often found at higher elevations.
How to spot
Look for its relatively large size, very long tail, and the distinctive fine barring on the neck and breast. Scan the canopy and mid-story of montane forests. Listen for its deep, resonant 'hoop-hoop-hoop' call.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours. Best observed in the early morning or late afternoon when birds might be more vocal or foraging conspicuously along forest edges.

Unlike many ground-feeding doves, Barred Cuckoo-Doves are primarily arboreal, spending most of their time in trees foraging for fruit, and are excellent flyers in dense forest environments.
