Spotted
The Saturnine Antshrike is a rather dark and somber-plumaged antshrike, hence its 'saturnine' name. It is a resident of dense humid forests in Amazonia.
Where to spot
Dense undergrowth and vine tangles within humid lowland rainforests, particularly in seasonally flooded forests or near streams, across parts of Amazonia (e.g., Brazil, Bolivia, Peru).
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, accelerating 'whip-whip-whip' call. Scan the dense understory patiently, watching for subtle movements. It can be very difficult to see in thick cover.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Calls are an important way to locate them.

This species is often difficult to observe directly due to its preference for very dense undergrowth and its generally skulking behavior.
