Spotted
The Scaled Antbird is a medium-sized antbird, aptly named for the striking scaled pattern on its underparts. It inhabits the dense undergrowth of humid lowland and foothill forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil, from Bahia south to Rio Grande do Sul.
How to spot
Search in the dense understory of humid primary and mature secondary Atlantic Forest. Listen for its characteristic calls, which are a series of rapid, whistled notes. Its scaled plumage is the key visual identifier.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during early mornings when active.

The male's prominent scaled patterning makes it one of the most visually distinctive members of its genus, easily separating it from other similarly-sized antbirds, particularly when seen well.
