Scan dead branches or broken stumps with binoculars during the day, looking for a bird that resembles an extension of the wood. At night, use a spotlight to search for its reflective eyes along forest edges or clearings.

Primarily nocturnal. Best observed after dark when it is actively hunting or by meticulously searching for its camouflage during the day.
