The Northern Potoo is a widespread species found across Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. It is a master of camouflage, blending perfectly with tree trunks and branches during its daytime roost, appearing as an extension of the wood.
Where to spot
Found from northern Mexico south through Central America to Costa Rica, and across the Greater Antilles (Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola). Inhabits various woodlands, dry forests, and semi-open areas.
How to spot
During the day, look for it perched vertically on dead stumps, fence posts, or broken branches. At night, listen for its distinctive, mournful, descending whistle. Use a spotlight to locate its reflective eyes along forest edges or in clearings.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal. Most active from dusk until dawn, and its distinctive calls are often heard throughout the night.
