Spotted
The Andean Potoo is a unique species found in the cloud forests and humid montane woodlands of the Andes. Its mottled plumage provides excellent camouflage against lichen-covered branches and mossy trees in its high-altitude habitat.
Where to spot
Restricted to the Andes Mountains of South America, from Venezuela through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. Inhabits montane cloud forests and humid woodlands, typically at elevations between 1,500m and 3,000m.
How to spot
During the day, look for it perched vertically on mossy or lichen-covered branches, where it can be incredibly difficult to distinguish from the environment. At night, listen for its distinctive, slightly nasal call, and use a spotlight to search for its reflective eyes in its high-altitude forest habitat.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal. Most active at dusk and dawn when it forages for large insects.

Unlike most potoo species which prefer lower elevations, the Andean Potoo often perches at higher elevations in the Andes, adapting to the cooler and more humid conditions of montane environments.
