The Double-barred Finch is a small, neat Australian finch, easily recognized by the two black bands across its white breast. It is a highly social species.
Where to spot
Widespread across northern and eastern Australia, inhabiting open woodlands, grasslands, and savannas, usually near water.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive black and white barred pattern on the breast. They are usually found in small flocks foraging on grass seeds on the ground.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round. Breeding mainly occurs during the wet season in the north, and spring/summer in the south.
It is often referred to as the 'Owl Finch' due to its owl-like facial pattern around its eyes.
