Spotted by
The Common Potoo is the most widespread and frequently encountered potoo species, renowned for its exceptional camouflage that allows it to mimic a broken branch or stump during the day. Its melancholic call is a familiar sound in many Neotropical nights.
Where to spot
Widespread throughout much of Central and South America, from Mexico to northern Argentina. Found in a variety of habitats, including forests, woodlands, plantations, and even urban parks.
How to spot
During the day, scan dead tree stumps, fence posts, or vertical branches for its characteristic upright, camouflaged roost. At night, listen for its famous, mournful 'My-dear-POTO-OOO' call and use a spotlight to find its eyeshine.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal, active from dusk to dawn. Its call is often heard starting just after sunset and continuing intermittently through the night.

The Common Potoo's large, forward-facing eyes are perfectly adapted for nocturnal vision, providing excellent light-gathering capabilities to hunt flying insects in low light conditions.
