Spotted
The Ecuadorian Chachalaca is a medium-sized bird endemic to the dry forests and scrublands of western Ecuador and extreme northwestern Peru. Known for its relatively drab plumage and distinctive voice, it is often heard before it is seen.
Where to spot
Look for the Ecuadorian Chachalaca in the dry to semi-humid forests, scrublands, and forest edges of western Ecuador and northwestern Peru. They prefer areas with dense undergrowth.
How to spot
Listen for their characteristic loud calls to locate them. They can be shy but are sometimes seen foraging in small groups in trees or on the ground. Use binoculars to scan dense vegetation.

This chachalaca's call is a loud, rattling 'cha-cha-lac' that is often given in a chorus by several individuals, especially at dawn and dusk, making it a prominent sound in its habitat.
