Spotted
The Himalayan Monal, the national bird of Nepal, is renowned for the male's iridescent, rainbow-like plumage. It is considered one of the most spectacular pheasants.
Where to spot
Inhabits rhododendron and coniferous forests, and rocky slopes across the Himalayas, including Nepal, India, Bhutan, Pakistan, and Tibet.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, ringing calls that echo through the mountains. Scan forest edges, clearings, and open slopes carefully; their vibrant colors can give them away.
When to spot
Best observed early morning and late afternoon when foraging in open clearings or near forest edges. More visible after fresh snowfall when they move to lower altitudes.
